Milky Way Shape

Looks like we live in a giant Pringle.

According to a new 3D model of the Milky Way, our galaxy is warped and shaped like the popular brand of potato chip.

“I’d say that it is shaped like a Pringle,” Radek Poleski, an astronomer at Ohio State University who helped to create the new map, told NBC News.

To make the map, astronomers looked at the Milky Way’s bright, pulsing stars called cepheids, which burn up to 10,000 times more brightly than the sun.

Using a high-tech telescope at Las Campanas Observatory in Chile, the researchers pinpointed the location of more than 2,400 stars to create their model.

Previously, astronomers were forced to rely on measurements of other galaxies to infer the size of the Milky Way, and assumed it was shaped like a flat disk.
