Ramanathaswamy Temple

Ramnathswamy Temple is a Hindu temple devoted to lord Shiva by ‘Maryadapurushottam’ sri Rama. But what makes this temple particularly interesting is its enormous long corridors. Its outer set of corridors is 6.9 m in height and stretches for 400 feet to the west and as many feet to the east and some 640 feet to the north and south. This makes the Ramanathaswamy temple’s corridor the longest in the world.

This twelve Jyotirlingam temple is considered as one of the four divine sites (char dham) of Hinduism in India. The incredibly charming pillars of the temple, constructed by the delicate carving of the rocks, shows the progress of centuries-ago architecture. The temple has two very significant ‘Lingam-s’ presiding, which are ‘Ramalingam’ and ‘Viswalingam’. The legend goes by that Rama wanted to have a large Lingam to worship Shiva to exonerate himself of the sin of killing a Brahmin or Ravana. He directed H,, anuman to bring a Lingam from the Himalayas. However, when Hanuman was delayed in bringing the Lingam. Ensured by the event, Devi Sita, the wife of Rama, built a small Lingam out of the sand that was available on the sea shore. Thus Both the Lingam was then installed by Lord Rama. 22 teerthas where the devotees purifies their body and soul in the sanctified water of the pools or teerthas before worshipping the God.
