A German man accidentally bought 28 Tesla Model 3 vehicles after a glitch on Tesla’s website caused him to submit his order multiple times.
Reddit user Balloon Man (off to a good start) tells the tale of how his dad came to purchase 27 more Model 3s than he had planned.
He was hoping to replace the aging family transport (a Ford Kuga) with a newer and more modern vehicle. The decision was made to go with the Tesla Model 3, and, during the COVID-19 pandemic, Germany was offering double the cashback incentives for EV purchases. It was a no-brainer decision — and so was what happened next.
A Model 3 with Autopilot option was added to the cart, and dad clicked “confirm” to send the order to Tesla. Except his click apparently didn’t send the order — it looked like he did absolutely nothing. Naturally, he tried and clicked “confirm” again, and then again, and again, for about two hours.
Eventually the website responded and the Tesla Model 3 order went through — as did the previous 27 order attempts, the ones made via the father’s persistent clicking. The order came to a staggering 1,404,000 euros (CDN$2,149,945) total, with each vehicle costing the family a non-refundable 100 euro deposit (for 28 cars, that’s roughly CDN$4,300).
Tesla is notorious for not offering refunds on its products once the buyer has clicked “confirm,” but after a frantic phone call, the brand came to understand the issue and cancelled all of the orders. Tesla also refunded the 2,800 euros in deposits.
