People who doubt contribution of MGR i can only pity them he was the most popular CM even more popular than Kamaraj that TN has ever seen. He was elected 3 times back to back by people and stayed as CM till his death.
Kamaraj brought Mid day meal scheme which gives free meal to Govt school,students only from Monday to Friday . MGR extended that to Nutritious mid day meal scheme including Saturday and Sunday and also including EGG and Dhall to the diet. For this he remarked that “i have already declared that kamaraj is My leader and Anna is My guide” it should not be in only words i need to implement that by extending the scheme that kamaraj brought.
He introduced ladies only bus, He did set up lot of new transport corporations in TN there were only few transport corporations then.Ministers from Karnataka and AP came to TN to do case study to implement TN model in their states with respect to transportation .
At least 200 Govt and Govt aided schools were introduce during his tenure . many many Ration shops were opened during his tenure . he abolished compartmentalization in SSLC and PUC exams back then if you fail in one subject you have to re write all the subjects.
He brought lot of industrial estates in TN. He curbed naxalites problem in erstwhile dharmapuri district by bringing SIPCOT industrial estate.
If kamraj can be complimented for bringing GOVT schools to TN, MGR can be can be complemented for bringing Govt colleges. he introduce so many Govt arts and science colleges.
he improved agriculture system in TN which improved output of food crops and quantity of food crops increased. . kamaraj lost 1967 elections due to severe Rice shortage that TN faced . ythere was no rice shortage during MGR period . he gave rice for 1 ruppe in rtion and ensured that it does not cross 8 rs in open market.
these are few of his achievements i am not able to recollect many more apart from this
